6×8”, oil on primed cardboard (sealed for archiveability)
Done 100% en plein air, or on location, this piece featured the bold, dark rocks of Dakota sandstone that seem to line the whole reservoir. I was drawn to the dark black shadows and brilliant blue highlights of water beside, as well as the areas where the two overlap into a blend of their hues and those of the landscape around. The dead tree limb hanging across added a natural diagonal to break up the leading line of rocks and water, and it felt like a natural composition with just a minor amount of tweaking needed.
In true Haley fashion, I forgot all painting surfaces that day, but had the back cardboard panel to my paper palette and, funny enough, some primer, so that saved the day and became my new work surface.
