Morning light during peak fall hits differently at Maroon Bells, CO. Standing as one of the most photographed spots in all of Colorado, these mountains deserve all of the praise they get. As an artist, this journey started by leaving my house at 2:00AM to drive four hours to Aspen, CO, where I painted from around 8:00AM to 4:00PM with a group of friends, and driving the four hours back home right after. It was all worth it to experience and paint the bells, and to meet all of the wonderful people who stopped by and watched us paint.

Studio changes included bringing the water back to the morning reflections to match the lighting and mood we experienced during the alpenglow.

Though we drove past this scene some ways, we couldn’t quite justify not going back and painting it. This incredible sea of dark ponderosas and golden lit aspens attracted quite the crowd, and it was an absolute joy to paint along with the coming storm and moody, foggy atmosphere. The distant mountains all but disappeared on us by the end of our painting day, but the rain held of just long enough for us to pack our gear out and head to dinner. Painted 100% en plein air, with no studio touch-ups.

Completed 100% en plein air during the Georgetown Plein Air Convention, this stands as a statement piece to Colorado’s crystalline waterfalls, turquoise rivers, and beautiful maroon rocks. This whole scene pulled me in, and I was compelled to paint it. I can’t help but stare at some of the colors reflected in the work, from glinting, warm highlights where the sun shone through the upper portion of the falls, to the deeper emerald layers of the basin below.

Late summer brings out some of the most beautiful colors, from the afternoon storms and desert plant life of Colorado to the Cottonwoods edging closer and closer to change. This painting was done on September 13th, 2026, and exemplifies one of the lesser-known issues of a drought year - early color changing. Many of the trees here were stressed, but as an artist, I seek to capture the beauty in every season knowing that there is hope for a redemptive winter of moisture.

I wanted to make sure and capture the edge of a passing storm, as well as the blue sky peeking through and lovely teal foreground shrubbery. The dark line of distant pines created the last piece of the value puzzle, and the painting came together.

I was astounded by the entire area up near Frisco/Leadville, shocked by the state of Dillon Reservoir after this drought… but my eye kept going to this pretty little ridge behind our hotel with visible aspen groves, lovely atmospheric perspective in the pine trees, and a fun, diagonal sort of structure to its layout. Though overwhelmed by choices and extremely limited on actual paint time, I decided to pursue this one. It helped, too, that the view was accessible by a neighboring hotel’s parking lot, as the storms that day were rather severe and unpredictable.

This piece was painted 90% on location, with 10% allotted to studio touch-ups to make it wall-ready.

The finish piece comes varnished, with a custom framing option available upon request. This ensures your painting is ready to hang as soon as it shows up on your doorstep.

Done 100% en plein air, or on location, with a group of other plein air artists in Eldorado Springs, Colorado. This was one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever been to, from the beautiful river to the rocky canyon beyond. It’s hard to believe this has been in my backyard this whole time.

This study was done at the very end of our venture, and funny enough, it was my favorite painting of the day. Sometimes all that’s needed is a bit of time pressure to make you loosen up and work on getting everything blocked in correctly.

I frequently find myself on specific Colorado trails, and this one is no different. Being far east, it delivers stunning views of several ranges within Rocky Mountain National Park, Devil’s Head, and Pike’s Peak further south. At certain vantage points, Pikes Peak soars over hilly suburban communities like this one, forming a beautiful diagonal visage of light, shadow, and atmospheric perspective.

This was painted across two plein air outings with about 5% of touch-ups within the studio to ready it for display in your home.

Done 100% en plein air, or on location, this piece featured the bold, dark rocks of Dakota sandstone that seem to line the whole reservoir. I was drawn to the dark black shadows and brilliant blue highlights of water beside, as well as the areas where the two overlap into a blend of their hues and those of the landscape around. The dead tree limb hanging across added a natural diagonal to break up the leading line of rocks and water, and it felt like a natural composition with just a minor amount of tweaking needed.

In true Haley fashion, I forgot all painting surfaces that day, but had the back cardboard panel to my paper palette and, funny enough, some primer, so that saved the day and became my new work surface.

Painted on location at the First Presbyterian Church in Georgetown, CO as part of the Georgetown Plein Air Convention. I returned for a second session the next week, and completed touch ups in the studio. This beautiful church was nestled in the town of Georgetown, overlooking the river and backed by the beautiful tree-laden mountains surrounding the valley.

Captivated by the bright green plant life and the sun hitting the rocks just below the shallow water, this piece was created in an attempt to capture the beautiful value contrast of this dense plant life and its weathered stone habitat. I’ve always been told to focus on more intimate subject matter, but sometimes I can’t help myself. I painted this from a paddleboard in the middle of Horsetooth Reservoir, staring up at some of the most beautiful rock formations that I thought deserved their own painting. I had some fun with the brilliant sandstone colors and deep turquoise foliage, and used my palette knife to work in some of the physical detail I caught in the rocks.

Painted en plein air, or on location, in Georgetown, CO as part of a 2-hour quick paint through the Georgetown Plein Air Convention. Working in a condensed timeline pushes me to be looser, impressionistic, and more gestural. There was a huge celebration for Colorado’s 150th birthday, and as part of that, a ton of collectors brought their classic cars and came out to watch the 2-hour paint out and subsequent art show afterwards.
